6 Secret Tips for a Great Thank You Note (with free examples)
In the past, the best move after an interview was to wait patiently to hear back. Nowadays, a thank you note (typically over email) is typical and even expected.
Your thank-you note may be your last interaction with the interviewer before writing the interview summary. Therefore, it's an opportunity you can't miss to paint yourself in a favorable light. But you have to be subtle about it and not sound too pushy or unprofessional.
Below are six tips for a thank you note that will increase your chances of getting the bob:
1. Keep it short
Increase the chances of the interviewer reading the entire note by keeping it short. Expecting the interviewer to read a long email is not a way to leave a good impression.
2. Thank the interviewer for her or his time
It's simply the polite thing to do. Interviewing is hard work, and it's nice to be appreciated.
3. Mimic the communication style of the interview
A good thank you letter is neither too formal nor too casual and loose. If the interviewer spoke with you in a relaxed, fun tone, don't write a thank you letter that's rigid and sounds unnatural.
Remember: the interviewer has already sized up your personality face-to-face! So don't write like someone you're not.
4. Mention and expand on a positive element of the interview
This is an opportunity to make sure that a favorable part of the interview is top of mind when the interviewer thinks about the interview and shows that you're thoughtful and/or simply a great person to work with.
It can be anything from an interview question to a conversation you had about a new restaurant in town.
DON'T use this as another opportunity to answer an interview question. The interview is over.
5. Mention one relevant achievement
Again, keep it short and make it all about why you think you're a good fit for the company.
6. Finish by calling out how excited you are about the job
Ideally, this should read as "I'm great for this job". Try to connect this to the achievement above and convey that you're excited about achieving similar things in this job.
